PAGE ONE: Turkish born Franklin Adler of Adler, the independent, family owned Geneva-based international jeweller, is celebrating 50 years in the jewellery business. Together with his wife and family, Adler creates highly individual fine jewellery, contemporary yet rich in stylistic references. “Gold has always been considered noble and ageless, and this doesn’t change with time. Some of the earliest of ancient jewellery was made in gold and it tells us a lot about the people who made and wore it, what kind of lives they led. Gold talks to you with style and charm; it always has a story to tell.

PAGE TWO “My first encounter with gold was as an apprentice, not in my father’s workshop, but to Armenian goldsmiths, in a workshop in the covered bazaar in Istanbul. I melted the pure gold myself, and mixed it with alloys to make it 18 carat. I have a wonderful memory of a red ball of fire, of seeing the gold in liquid form. Gold is also a symbol of power and security. Still today, in Turkey, the peasants will buy gold bangles, as savings, with the money they earn from the harvest. Indians too have great faith in the security of gold.

PAGE THREE: “We use a lot of gold at Adler, it makes the right statement for the modern working woman. It’s easy to wear, not too expensive and can be worn either alone or mixed with semi-precious stones. There is an element of fashion: 25 years ago we made replicas of archaeological pieces, a big trend at the time; today, the 40s is a strong influence. I think gold jewellery has taken the place of fantasy jewellery. The appeal of gold has come down to us through the centuries, it’s in our genes. Gold will always be a noble, magical material.”
